History
Jan Packaging, Inc. established in 1952
serves the export packing and crating requirements of many international
manufacturing and shipping companies. With lifting capacities in excess
of 150 tons there are few jobs that Jan can’t handle through its
state of the art facilities.
Jan Trucking and Rigging Company was established
in 1981 to support the export packing and crating services of Jan Packaging.
Seasoned experts provide the highest quality of rigging and crane services.
They are experienced in the dismantling and relocation of entire manufacturing
plants.
Jan International Forwarding was created
in 1986 to provide the customer with the convenience of one-stop export
service. Jan’s personnel have been well trained to secure bookings,
banking and clearance of shipments to foreign destinations along with
marine insurance coverage.
Jan Mil-Pak Company, the original entity
of the Jan Group, emerged in 1952 as one of the nation’s first
Mil-Spec packing facilities and continues to lead in this extremely
sensitive government monitored industry. Jan, whose letters J-A-N stand
for Joint Army Navy, was founded in Newark, New Jersey by Ed Malavarca,
a former government inspector, who continues to serve as the company
Chairman. Karl Malavarca currently oversees the Jan Group’s day-to-day
operations and serves as its President and CEO.
In October 1990 the Jan Group completed its $7 million warehouse in
Randolph, New Jersey. The warehouse provides 250,000 square feet of
space and serves as the complete shipping, receiving and staging facility.
It is located on 21 secured acres.
The Jan Group has met many challenges since it opened its doors in
1952. The following is a brief synopsis some of the work completed by
the Jan personnel all in a days work:
• In the late 1970’s Anaconda Wire and Cable Company of
Greenwich, Connecticut contracted with Jan Packaging to ship 407 trailer
loads of three complete wire cable extruder lines that today make up
the Saudi Cable Company of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The shipment totaled
approximately 26,000,000 pounds with many over dimensional loads.
• In the mid 1980’s Jan shipped for Korea Express 210 trailer
loads of 16-foot diameter concrete pipe manufacturing equipment for
irrigation purposes. The pipe totaled approximately 13,000,000 pounds
and its final destination was Libya.
• In April 1998 Jan Packaging was contracted for a shipment of
a steel strip mill to the Nakornthai Strip Mill of Chonburi, Thailand.
In four weeks Jan Packaging skidded 65 loads of structural steel, which
shipped in 65 high cube containers. The total weight was 2,197,495 pounds
and 115,931 cubic feet. During that same four weeks Jan Packaging also
packaged 408 boxes of steel mill equipment for Nakornthai. These boxes
totaled 4,529,946 pounds and 291,974 cubic feet and were delivered as
break bulk to the pier by Jan Trucking and Rigging in 133 flat bed truckloads.
• In October 2002 Jan Packaging shipped steel annealing furnaces
to Slovakia. Jan Trucking and Rigging carried 40 oversized loads of
furnaces and parts from Pennsylvania and Indiana to the Jan facility.
Jan prepared the freight for ocean shipment. It consisted of seven 40-foot
containers of parts and 35 truckloads of break bulk, which was delivered
to the Port of New York/New Jersey. The break bulk shipment consisted
of 49 pieces totaling 866,860 pounds and 91,801 cubic feet. Total turnaround
time for this shipment, from its first pickup to its last US port delivery
was three weeks. Jan International Forwarding arranged the ocean transport
to the ports of Bremerhaven and Antwerp, and also the trucking from
those ports to the final destination in Slovakia.
